I help people create websites… And in this process I receive several inquiries wherein people want to create websites that they can turn into business setups. Yes, they want to get in to the internet business. Now, that’s cool. And I really like to help out people with that. One of the common trends that I have noticed based on the interaction with people in the referred inquiries is that they always strive to keep looking for a novel idea? A new concept – something which is not existent in any of the forms. Isn’t it true for many of us quite an umpteen number of times. So, this is what I discuss with people during these inquiries – It’s not always necessary to come up with something which is new and is not available in any forms. The problem with this thinking is that you then tend to restrict yourself to just one aspect of measuring the feasibility of ideas – is anyone else doing it? Is it something new? I believe that’s wrong. It’s not always necessary to come up with novel ideas. You can always take up an idea, a concept that is already in existence and devise a new and different way to approach it. This also reminds me of Shiv Khera who says, “Winner don’t do different things, they do things differently”. And there are several phenomenal internet business successes to testify this.
Before Facebook, there were several other social networks in existence. It’s just that Mark Zuckerberg approached the problem of online social communication in a different way. Google entered the search engine space quite at a later stage when Lycos, Yahoo! and AltaVista were already well-established in the search engine space. And see where’s Google today!
So, the point which I want to put across is that it’s always not necessary to think of new ideas, problems and concepts. Take-up problems which are already being addressed. Think of ways in which you can address these problems in different ways – with different approaches and solutions. Isn’t it what Tumblr did and what Quora is doing?
